Jack Ü is Officially on Hiatus
If 2017 is the year of Major Lazer, what does that mean for Jack Ü?
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, given by Major Lazer and Jack Ü member, Diplo, the “Run Up” producer confirmed his commitment to the full development of Major Lazer. The trio, comprised of Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Jillionaire released a new single, “Run Up,” yesterday as part of the group’s brand partnership with Barcadi for their “Sound of Rum” campaign. The single foreshadows Major Lazer’s forthcoming 2017 album, “Music is the Weapon.”
Given the various project with which Major Lazer is currently involved, the advancement of Major Lazer’s dance music presence requires the majority of Diplo’s energy and focus, a reality that has ground Jack Ü’s progression to a screeching halt.
Diplo has officially confirmed that Jack Ü will take somewhat of a break this year in the Apple Music interview, where he states “I think right now I’m just trying to make Major Lazer. Last year I kind of did everything and I wore myself really thin trying to do all those projects but this year it’s all about getting the Major Lazer stuff out. We have a lot of records we wrote together me and Skrillex, but I don’t think it’s time to put those out now. Just trying to concentrate on this Major Lazer material.”
A Jack Ü hiatus has long been contemplated by fans, after Skrillex referenced the duo’s final stop of the tour in a tweet posted on August 28, 2016. It would be a “long, long time” before Jack Ü’s name appeared on festival lineups and the like, according to Skrillex in a tweet that has since been deleted. While the tweet sparked rumors of a Diplo/Skrillex split, it seems that both DJs are simply placing Jack Ü on hold in order to work on other projects.
Being that Diplo and Skrillex are sitting on potential gems of tracks under their Jack Ü alias, the duo’s later resume will inevitably yield Jack Ü hits, most notably that Florence Welch collab teased previously. Will 2018 be the year of Jack Ü then? Only time will tell.
