Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland arrested for fraud
Fyre Festival dominated headlines this year, the boutique festival located in the Bahamas attracting the world’s attention as ticket holders expecting a lavish, private festival found themselves on site of a space more comparable to a location on Survivor than an extravagant resort. Condemned to haphazardly erected tents, few of which were adequately equipped with mattresses and bedding, attendees were subjected to uncomfortable and potentially health hazardous conditions.
Co-organized by Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, Fyre Festival has been under FBI investigation, scrutiny that has led to McFarland’s formal charging of wire fraud, a charge that highlights McFarland’s design to scam not merely Fyre Fest ticket holders, but investors. McFarland was arrested in New York on Friday.
While McFarland could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Ja Rule was not mentioned in the charges.
