Hip Hop is now the most popular musical genre in the U.S.

Move over rock, hip hop is now the genre of music most listened to by the American public. Rock music’s first time displacement from the number one slot of musical popularity has been indicated by the latest report released by Neilson Music, observer of audio consumption ranging from the most celebrated songs, to championed genres.

Neilson Music found 25.1%, or one quarter of the U.S. listening to hip hop music, as compared to 23% of the U.S. listening to rock. Despite its relative replacement in prominence among listeners, rock still controls much of U.S. album sales, recording 40% of album sales in the nation. The loss of the number one slot therefore arrives as less of a loss for the rock community, but the transition in genre prevalence conveys a shift in musical preferences among U.S. listeners.
