Listen as Fyre Fest Founders Inform Employees That They Will Not Be Paid
The embers of Ja Rule and Billy McFarland’s failed Fyre Festival continue to smolder three weeks later.
In an explosive 9:17 audio clip obtained by VICE News, festival founders Billy McFarland and Ja Rule—although moreso McFarland than Rule—inform their employees that paychecks corresponding to the prior two weeks of work would not be arriving, or at least not any time soon. McFarland notifies his employees that he would not be firing them either, a necessity in the obtainment of unemployment benefits across states.
McFarland appeals to employees by offering to allow the staff members to continue fulfilling their respective roles, promising to pay the employees if and when the business, Fyre Media, reaches a verifiable level of financial stability again. “We’re not firing anyone, we’re just letting you know that there will be no payroll in the short term,” McFarland notifies phone listeners. McFarland goes on to deliver the news that Fyre never closed Series A funding amidst surprised reactions from the employees, one of which retorts “then why did you say otherwise?”
We’re sure there’s the potential for another lawsuit—or five—somewhere in this clip, leaving Fyre Festival ever a “hot” topic, even weeks later.
