Ed Sheeran is Next Artist to Appear on a Major Lazer Single
Resting within the top ten of Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart at number nine, “Run Up,” Major Lazer’s latest collab with Canadian rapper, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Trinidadian “queen of rap,” Nicki Minaj, has enjoyed a success since its January 26th release that is reflected by the Billboard chart. However unsurprisingly, number nine isn’t a satisfactory numerical position for Major Lazer constituent, Diplo. “If we put out four songs that go top five, then I’ll put the album out,” Diplo reasoned in a recent interview with Your EDM that touched on the “Boy Oh Boy” DJ’s reluctance to drop the Major Lazer record that reggae/moombahton enthusiasts have patiently waited for since the announcement of the album’s name, “Music is The Weapon.”
“We have enough songs [for an album] but I don’t think people digest our music like that. The last record went gold but it took a year and a half to do that,” mused Diplo. Few can argue with the Grammy award winning DJ and producer, whose longevity in the dance music scene is a testament to Diplo’s musical strategy. “It’s the singles that keep us rising and get more people coming out to our parties,” Diplo asserts.
With “Run Up” sitting pretty at number nine, it seems that the PARTYNEXTDOOR/Minaj single will not be one of the four tracks to hurtle towards top five status, bringing the release of the next Major Lazer record upon us, but that doesn’t mean that Major Lazer will cease to release music; the group will instead turn to the single as its primary form of production. Ed Sheeran appears to be the next artist to join Major Lazer’s dance music “A Team,” based on a tweet posted by Diplo on his personal Twitter account.
The pairing is perhaps an unusual one, yet the unexpected quality of the single currently in progress might just attract enough buzz for the single to claim one of the coveted top five chart spots referenced by Diplo. If we’re curious to see how Major Lazer integrates Ed Sheeran’s soft vocals with the group’s tropical sound, surely the rest of the dance music community likewise will be.
