Deadmau5 Slams New Calvin Harris Album...And it's Not Even Out Yet
Perhaps one of the toughest critics in the music industry to date, deadmau5 has demonstrated time and time again that he is not one to hold his tongue when he has an opinion that he’d like to voice, Twitter consistently materializing as the platform for deadmau5’s comments.
In what is perhaps record response time on deadmau5’s part, the “lots of shows in a row” organizer has yet again taken to Twitter to lampoon Calvin Harris’s latest musical initiative, the forthcoming “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1.” Its June 30th release date was announced yesterday on Harris’s snap, along with a stacked list of collaborators including Ariana Grande, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla Sign, Future, Khalid, Katy Perry, Pharrell Willliams, and many more.
Harris has curated what will assumedly be to most people, an impressive group of collaborators. But to deadmau5, the assortment of hip hop and pop superstars signals a sellout on Harris’s behalf. “nothing new here. just your typical sellout rant about people who obviously know how to pander shit for the sake of capitalism. moving on,” deadmau5 concluded his complaint, a series of laments that played out in five tweets or so.
“anyone ever remember when calvin harris was just…calvin harris? who the f*ck are all these other people? like…why?” deadmau5 wrote today in the tweet that would kick off the rant. The Canadian producer does have a valid point in underscoring the clear bleed of EDM into pop and hip hop genres, creating a sort of secondary dance music genre reliant on name brand collaborations, but of course, that point is delivered in snarky, 140-character lines.
