New Event Alert: Alok to Headline Webster Hall's Gotham Event January 14th
If its exportation of coffee wasn’t enough of a reason to thank Brazil, another one of its exports is.
Cue Alok, Brazilian DJ/producer from Brasília. Known by his full name, Alok Achkar Peres Petrillo, Alok’s interaction with the electronic dance music genre can be traced back to the early 2000s, more specifically, 2004—the year Alok credits as that responsible for the beginning of his career as a DJ/producer.
From 2004 on, Alok channeled his unparalleled charisma and inexhaustible energy into the development of his production skills. Working tirelessly to craft a stylistics of sound that cannot be boxed neatly into any singular category of genre, Alok’s tireless efforts would prove to be fruitful. 2014 yielded titular success reflective of Alok’s tenacity within the dance music realm: Alok received the award for “Best DJ” from the Rio Music Conference Label, in addition to his selection as the “#1 DJ in Brazil” from Revista House Magazine.
Clearly well established in Brazil, Alok now strives to gain the support of the American dance music community, an aspiration well within reach, if not already achieved. Alok’s unique blend of dark house drops paired with gentle acoustic vocal hooks unites two auditory elements not initially conceptualized for an ability to work well in tandem. Alok’s music mixes components of sound that one would not readily think to mix, providing the DJ with a distinct, one of a kind approach to production. Get a taste for Alok's musical style below, with his single "Hear Me Now," and with his "Summer 2017 Mix," linked above.
Those interested in catching a live Alok performance need not brandish their passports in order to do so. Brazil’s finest will take the stage at Webster Hall—recently named the second most popular club in the world—this Saturday, January 13th to offer Webster attendees a sampling of his creative sound. Doors for the event will open at 10 PM, with support to be provided by Dischetto and TJANI.
The experience of the event will be amplified by its billing under Webster’s consistent Saturday evening theme, Gotham. An atmosphere that seeks to replace at times overpowering light/stage production tactics, Gotham offers a general darkness of room in addition to various theatrics, including balcony repellers. The scene may well best be said to be dramatic, a drama of location that will inevitably contribute to the effect of Alok’s music when played in such a venue. Gotham is itself never an event to miss, yet now with Alok as its Saturday headliner, it’s a must attend show.
